During the meetings, Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness, Miriam Dalli, highlighted the unique challenges faced by Island States. “Small Island States and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face specific geographic, structural, and economic challenges that require tailored solutions. The EU should demonstrate flexibility in recognising just transition pathways that are people-centred and adapted to each context,” the Minister said.

Malta succeeded in highlighting two key priorities during the EU Ministers’ discussions: water resilience and the Oceans Pact. The European Water Resilience Strategy, presented by the European Commission, was welcomed by Malta for acknowledging the difficulties faced by islands experiencing water shortages.

“Water resilience is crucial for both the environment and national security in Malta. That is why we support flexibility, stable EU funding, and investment in infrastructure. Continued EU support, alongside innovative financing options such as green bonds, will ensure that vulnerable regions can manage water resources sustainably,” Minister Dalli stated.
