Malta Tops EU Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Charts

Malta has registered the sharpest decline in greenhouse gas emissions across the European Union in the first quarter of 2025, according to new figures published by Eurostat.
Emissions in Malta fell by 6.2% compared with the same period last year, making it the leading EU member state in reducing emissions.
This achievement came while Malta’s economy continued to expand, placing it among the countries that managed to cut emissions without sacrificing growth.

By contrast, EU-wide emissions rose by 3.4% to 900 million tonnes of CO₂-equivalents, with increases recorded in 20 member states. The largest rises were reported in sectors such as electricity and gas supply (+13.6%) and households (+5.6%). Only seven EU countries, including Malta, managed to reduce their emissions.
Reacting to the figures, Minister for the Environment, Energy and Enterprise, Miriam Dalli said Malta’s performance shows that economic growth and climate action can complement one another.
“This result reflects the work we are carrying out across different sectors. While there is still more to be done, we are committed to continue improving and will never give up,” she said.
Dalli pointed to ongoing reforms and major investments in the energy sector as central to Malta’s strategy, while stressing the government’s pledge to ensure that no one is left behind in the green transition.
