Malta to Host 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games

Malta has officially been announced as the host of the 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG), marking a historic first for the country.
The announcement was made during a ceremony in Malta, attended by key figures including Commonwealth Sport Malta President Julian Pace Bonello, Commonwealth Sport President Dr Donald Rukare, and Minister for Education and Sport Clifton Grima.
The 8th edition of the CYG will welcome around 1,150 athletes aged 14–18 from 74 Commonwealth countries and territories, competing across Malta and Gozo in eight sports: Athletics and Para Athletics, Swimming and Para Swimming, Netball, Squash, Triathlon, Weightlifting, and for the first time, Sailing and Water Polo.
Mr Pace Bonello hailed the Games as a celebration of youth and excellence that will leave a lasting legacy, while Dr Rukare praised Malta’s athlete-first approach and readiness to host a world-class event.
Minister Grima described the event as an investment in Malta’s youth and international reputation.
Malta’s CYG history includes silver medallist Ryan Bugeja and triathlete Kai Azzopardi, who welcomed the Games’ arrival.
Beyond sport, Malta 2027 will feature a cultural programme focused on sustainability, youth empowerment, and heritage, strengthening Malta’s role on the international sporting stage.
