Malta To Get New Mental Health Centre With €5.3 Million EU Funding

Prime Minister Robert Abela, together with Minister for European Funds and the Implementation of the Electoral Programme Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi and the Richmond Foundation, has presented plans for a new Wellbeing Centre to be developed in Mosta on government-provided land.

The centre will feature recreational, educational and therapeutic spaces within a modern environment tailored to mental health services. The project is backed by €5.3 million in funding from the European Regional Development Fund, allocated by the Government.
Abela said the initiative forms part of a broader vision to strengthen support services for people facing challenges, in partnership with civil society organisations.
He noted that mental health is increasingly recognised as a central part of community wellbeing and praised the Richmond Foundation for its work in tackling stigma. He also confirmed ongoing progress on a new mental health hospital at Mater Dei.
The Foundation has significantly expanded its services in recent years, increasing therapy sessions tenfold. More than 11,000 individuals, including secondary school students, have completed the Mental Health First Aid Course.
Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi said the project highlights how European funds can improve everyday lives by supporting accessible services and modern infrastructure.

Chief Executive Officer Daniela Calleja Bitar said the centre will offer a safe and dignified environment, including therapy rooms, family spaces and training areas.
