‘Malta Tells’: Traditional Maltese Balcony To Bring Public Spaces To Life

A new cultural initiative, Malta Tells, will bring the traditions, stories and identity of Maltese communities to life through an innovative combination of theatre, art and local storytelling.
In the coming weeks, several towns and villages across Malta and Gozo will host a traditional Maltese balcony that will be transformed into a unique mobile stage for performances in public spaces.

The project aims to create engaging cultural experiences by bringing performances closer to communities while highlighting the history, heritage and attractions of different localities.
Through interactive productions, residents and visitors will have the opportunity to discover the stories and traditions that make each area distinctive.
Minister for Local Government and Public Works Alison Zerafa Civelli visited the site where the specially designed balcony is currently being constructed.
The structure has been created to move between different locations, allowing various communities to become temporary stages for artistic and cultural events.
The Minister said that projects such as Malta Tells demonstrate the important role culture can play in giving new life to public spaces and strengthening local communities.

She added that Local Councils are central to community life and that initiatives of this kind help transform towns and villages into vibrant cultural hubs.
Artistic Director Ryan Galea explained that the traditional balcony will represent more than just a stage, as it will also serve as a symbol of Maltese identity. Performances will explore everyday life, customs and traditions, supported by artistic features and digital content that promote local heritage.
