The Global Semiconductor Conference Malta 2025 brought together global industry leaders, policymakers, and researchers to discuss the future of one of the world’s most critical industries.

Now in its second edition, the event highlighted Malta’s growing role within Europe’s semiconductor ecosystem and its ambition to remain a reliable partner in advancing technological innovation.

At the centre of Malta’s semiconductor success is STMicroelectronics, whose ongoing expansion, including the extension of its Smart Factory, marks the largest investment in the country’s history.

This milestone underscores Malta’s increasing appeal as an investment destination, with EY and the Financial Times ranking the island among the world’s top performers for attracting new foreign direct investment relative to its size.

Recent national initiatives are further strengthening this momentum. Budget 2026 introduced a 175% tax deduction for Research and Innovation (R&I) expenditure, while the €8 million Malta Semiconductor Competence Centre, cofinanced by the Chips Joint Undertakings, is offering researchers access to world-class training.

During the event, STMicroelectronics President Fabio Gualandris unveiled the company’s first humanoid robot for semiconductor manufacturing in Malta, a step that he said combines human creativity with machine precision.

Minister Silvio Schembri and Malta Enterprise CEO George Gregory both emphasised Malta’s strategic role in shaping Europe’s technological future.
