A recent survey conducted by the National Statistics Office ,on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) usage in Malta, partly funded by the European Commission, reveals that internet use remains widespread, particularly among younger age groups.

All individuals aged 16 to 44 reported using the internet within three months prior to the survey, while usage was lowest among those aged 65 to 74, at 76.9 per cent.

The internet is primarily used for communication, with 99.0 per cent of users reporting such activity, followed by accessing information (92.6 per cent).

Mobile devices are the most common means of going online, with 98.6 per cent of users relying on them, and nearly 90 per cent of internet users reported experiencing no difficulties while online.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools have seen significant uptake, with almost half of internet users aged 16 to 74 employing such tools in 2025.

Use is highest among younger users, with 76.4 per cent of those aged 16 to 24 using AI, compared to just 12.5 per cent of those aged 65 to 74.

Most users cited private purposes as the main reason for AI adoption, followed by work-related activities. Those not using AI primarily indicated a lack of need (26.6 per cent) or awareness (11.8 per cent).

E-government and e-commerce adoption continues to grow, with 78.3 per cent of the target population accessing e-government services and 65.1 per cent engaging in e-commerce.

Digital skills remain strong among younger users, with 91.5 per cent of 16 to 24-year-olds having at least basic skills, compared to 30.5 per cent among those aged 65 to 74.

Online privacy awareness is also high, with over half of users limiting access to their profiles and checking website security, while nearly 30 per cent use anti-tracking software to manage data privacy.

These findings underline Malta’s strong digital engagement and the ongoing integration of advanced technologies into daily life.
