Malta’s Turtle Nesting Season Closes With Zero Nests

This was a hard year, explained Nature Trust Malta, as yesterday officially marked the closing of turtle nesting season in Malta with zero nests.
It was a rollercoaster the team explained, from the thrill of finding crawls that turn out to be false and the confusion of watching a turtle dig a nesting chamber only for it to not lay a single egg.
There was even frustration of seeing turtles coming out on rocks or on extremely busy beaches only to find people blocking the path. There was immediate upscaling of beaches being monitored, jumping from 7 to 17.
‘Unfortunately, none of the attempts resulted in a nest. Volunteers will keep patrolling until the end of August, to make sure that if there is a late nester, it is not missed.’
‘This year has showed us we cannot take anything for granted. Just because we've had at least 1 nest every year, it is not guaranteed.’
