Malta’s Population Set To Grow By 26% By 2100, Says Eurostat

Malta is expected to experience one of the strongest population increases in the European Union over the coming decades, with Eurostat projecting a 26% rise in the number of residents by 2100.

The figures, published as part of Eurostat’s EUROPOP2025 population projections, show that Malta is among just two EU countries where population growth is expected to exceed 25% between 2025 and the end of the century.

Luxembourg is projected to record the largest increase, at 36.4%, while Malta follows with the second-highest growth rate.

The projections come as most European countries face long-term population decline. The EU’s total population is expected to reach a peak of 453.3 million in 2029 before gradually decreasing to 398.8 million by 2100.

For Malta, the continued rise is expected to be driven primarily by migration. Eurostat’s analysis indicates that countries recording population growth over the period are largely dependent on sustained positive net migration, as natural population change is expected to become less favourable.

Despite the projected increase in overall population numbers, Malta is also expected to face significant demographic changes.

The country’s population is forecast to age considerably over the coming decades, reflecting wider European trends linked to lower fertility rates and longer life expectancy.
