An abandoned site in Għaxaq has been transformed into Ġnien taż-Żebbuġ, a new picnic area featuring more than 650 trees, interactive play equipment and family-friendly facilities.

Covering approximately 25,000 square metres in Triq l-Andar, Ġnien taż-Żebbuġ was officially inaugurated by Environment Minister Miriam Dalli following regeneration works carried out by Project Green.

The project, co-financed with EU funding, involved an investment of more than €1 million and includes picnic tables, benches, bicycle parking, children's play equipment and a rainwater reservoir for irrigation.

More than 500 existing olive trees were preserved, while around 150 additional trees and 440 shrubs were planted to improve the area's biodiversity.

Għaxaq Mayor Karl Boxall said the space would primarily benefit local residents but would also welcome visitors from across Malta and Gozo.
