Taking to social media, mayor of Ħaż-Żebbuġ Steve Zammit Lupi shared some history behind the fountain in the locality, after a man was filmed bathing naked in the fountain some nights ago.

Zammit Lupi used the opportunity to discuss how the fountain dates back to the time of British Governor Sir William Reid, and as inaugurated in 1855.

The eagle on the fountain represents the Reid family coat of arms, and was built to commemorate the arrival of running water in the town, which was Brough from Wied l-Isqof.

‘Governor Reid commissioned the fountain because he often passed through Żebbuġ on his way from Valletta to his summer residence at Verdala Palace. The horses pulling the carriages would stop here to drink.’
