According to a recent survey published by Eurostat, Malta’s minimum wage now ranks among the lowest in the European Union, standing at €994 per month.

The latest data places Malta above only seven EU countries, with several states that previously trailed it, including Greece, Poland and Croatia, now offering monthly minimum wages exceeding €1,000.

The comparison covers 22 EU member states, excluding countries such as Denmark, Italy and Sweden, which do not operate a national minimum wage. At the top of the scale, Luxembourg, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium all report minimum wages more than double Malta’s level. When adjusted for purchasing power, Malta’s position weakens further, falling below all but five EU countries.

Despite this, the figures show that Malta has a relatively small proportion of workers earning the minimum wage. Around 3.5% of employees fall into this category, comparable to the Netherlands and lower than most EU states.

Eurostat data also shows Malta’s minimum wage growth has lagged behind most EU countries over the past decade, increasing at an average annual rate of just 3.2%.
