Malta’s First Perinatal Mental Health Centre Strengthens Support For New Parents

Malta’s first community centre dedicated to perinatal mental health offers specialist care to women experiencing mental health difficulties during pregnancy and the first year post childbirth.
Since the Censu Moran Regional Health Centre in Paola began offering these services in February 2026, there have been around 1,200 appointments attended by new parents.
The centre is staffed by professionals in psychiatry, midwifery, obstetrics, psychology and many other disciplines.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Dr Ian Borg visited the centre and praised workers for making mental health “care and assistance increasingly accessible.”
The centre is also introducing a National Perinatal Mental Health Screening Programme where pregnant women are invited to document their mental health struggles in a digital questionnaires on the myHealth platform.
Between August and September 2026, 940 invitations were issued and 225 screenings completed. Authorities plan to extend the programme to mothers after birth, as well as fathers and partners, encouraging families to seek help early.
