Malta’s Eurovision Song Contest is just around the corner, with the semi-final taking place tonight and the grand final on Saturday.

The 2026 Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Vienna, Austria, and whoever comes out on top this week will earn the honour of representing Malta on the international stage.

But let’s rewind for a moment… who were the very first artists to represent Malta at Eurovision?

Malta made its Eurovision debut in 1971 with Joe Grech. Unfortunately, the country finished last, a result that was repeated in 1972 when Helen and Joseph performed ‘L-Imħabba’

Following these early setbacks, Malta took a brief two-year break to regroup before returning in 1975. That year, Renato took to the stage and secured a respectable 12th-place finish.

After that, Malta stepped away from the competition for 16 years; a pause that clearly paid off.

When the country returned, it found its rhythm, going on to achieve an impressive eight consecutive top-10 finishes at Eurovision.
