Malta’s electricity supply increased by 3.2% in 2025, reaching 3,207.1 GWh, according to new figures published by the National Statistics Office.
The increase came as electricity demand also rose, with the annual average demand reaching 492 MW, 2.9% higher than the previous year.

During 2025, Malta’s electricity supply came from three main sources: net generation from power plants, which accounted for 56.5% of the total, net imports at 32.1%, and renewable sources at 11.3%. Electricity production from power plants increased by 0.5% over the previous year, reaching 1,858.3 GWh.
96.8% of this renewable energy was produced from photovoltaic panels.

Malta also imported 1,031 GWh of electricity through the interconnector in 2025, an increase of 6.2% compared to the previous year. And unsurprisingly, the summer months saw the highest electricity demand. July recorded the highest amount of electricity supplied during the year at 362.6 GWh, accounting for 11.3% of the total, followed by August with 334.6 GWh.

The highest electricity demand was also recorded during these two months, reaching 637 MW in July and 585 MW in August.
Despite the overall increase in electricity supply, greenhouse gas emissions from fuel combustion at power plant sources decreased by 2.4% compared to 2024.
