Malta’s Deficit Decreases To €65.5 million by April 2026

Malta's public finances showed a marked improvement during the first four months of 2026, with the Government's Consolidated Fund registering a deficit of €65.5 million by the end of April, reported NSO.
This represents a significant reduction of €195.9 million compared to the same period in 2025.
The improvement was driven by strong growth in government revenue, which increased by €635.7 million year-on-year.
Income Tax accounted for the largest share of this rise, generating an additional €347.5 million compared to the previous year.
Government expenditure also increased during the period, rising by €439.8 million. The largest increase was recorded under Programmes and Initiatives, which grew by €191.8 million, reflecting continued public investment and spending commitments.
Meanwhile, Central Government Debt stood at €11.97 billion at the end of April 2026. This marks an increase of €1.14 billion when compared to the corresponding month in 2025, despite the improved deficit position.
