Malta’s 1400 Phone Line Guides You On Where To Seek Medical Care

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Ian Borg has highlighted the telephone service, 1400, designed to help people determine whether they need to visit the Mater Dei Emergency Department when they have a medical problem.
In a video on social media, Minister Ian Borg explained how the phone line is intended to direct people towards the right service for their circumstances and help them determine whether their issue requires emergency treatment.
Of the hundreds of people who call everyday, Ian Borg says that only a small percentage actually need emergency care.
The post comes amid continued attention on the pressure facing Mater Dei Hospital’s Emergency Department. By encouraging people who are unsure about their condition to seek advice before heading to hospital, the service could help reduce unnecessary visits to the Emergency Department and lower the strain on emergency staff.
Ian Borg stressed the importance of ensuring that people receive the right care, while asserting that those facing serious or even life-threatening emergencies should immediately call 112.
