Malta recorded the third-lowest amount of waste generated per capita in the European Union in 2024, according to Eurostat data, with 1,092kg produced per person.

The figures exclude major mineral waste from mining, quarrying, construction and demolition, and place Malta among the EU’s lowest waste producers under this measure.

Across the EU, an average of 1,697kg of waste was generated per person in 2024, excluding major mineral waste. This amounted to 765 million tonnes in total.

Estonia recorded the highest amount of waste generated per capita, at 4,703kg, followed by Belgium at 3,157kg and Bulgaria at 2,881kg.

Ireland and Slovenia also recorded relatively low figures, at 1,199kg and 1,254kg per person, respectively.

Separately, Eurostat reported that 42% of waste treated across the EU in 2024 was recycled, while 37.8% was sent to landfill.
