Malta Records Second-Lowest Unemployment Rate In EU, Eurostat Reveals

Malta recorded an unemployment rate of just 3.4% in August 2026, significantly below the European Union average of 6.1%, according to the latest figures published by Eurostat.

Malta registered the joint second-lowest unemployment rate in the European Union in August 2026, sharing the position with Poland and Slovenia.

According to figures published by Eurostat on 1st October, Malta's unemployment rate stood at 3.4%, with only Czechia recording a lower rate of 3.2%.

The figures also revealed that approximately 12,000 people were unemployed in Malta during August, compared to around 8,000 during the same month in 2025.

Despite maintaining one of the lowest unemployment rates across the EU, Malta experienced an increase from 2.5% in August 2025 to 3.4% in August 2026.

Meanwhile, unemployment across the European Union stood at 6.1%, while the euro area recorded a slightly higher rate of 6.4%.

At the other end of the scale, Finland registered the highest unemployment rate at 10.3%, followed by Spain at 10.0% and Sweden at 8.7%.

The figures also highlighted Malta's relatively low youth unemployment rate. Among those aged under 25, unemployment stood at 9.7%, compared to the EU average of 15.4%.

Across the European Union, approximately 13.6 million people were unemployed in August 2026, an increase of 348,000 compared to the same month the previous year.

The latest Eurostat findings place Malta among the EU countries with the lowest unemployment levels, despite the year-on-year increase in the number of people seeking work.
