MALTA RECORDS OVER 4,000 ROAD ACCIDENTS FROM APRIL TO JUNE

Road traffic accidents and casualties increased during the second quarter of 2026 when compared with the same period last year, according to figures covering April to June.

A total of 4,072 traffic accidents were reported, representing a 1.1 per cent increase over the corresponding quarter of 2025. The Northern Harbour district recorded the highest number, with 1,340 accidents, accounting for 32.9 per cent of the total.

Road traffic casualties rose by 16 per cent to 398. Of these, 146 people suffered grievous injuries, including 86 drivers, 19 passengers and 41 pedestrians, cyclists and others. Three people died during the quarter, two fewer than in the same period last year.

Males accounted for 72.6 per cent of those grievously injured, while 29.4 per cent of all casualties involved people aged between 26 and 40.

Passenger car occupants represented the largest share of casualties at 41.7 per cent, followed closely by motorcycle users at 40.7 per cent. Fourteen cyclists were involved in accidents, with six suffering grievous injuries.

Ħal Qormi recorded the highest number of accidents among localities, with 223 cases, followed by Birkirkara with 211 and San Pawl il-Baħar with 209.

The highest number of accidents occurred on Thursdays and between noon and 2:59pm.
