Malta Records Highest Employment Rate in the EU Among 20–64-Year-Olds

Malta has once again recorded the highest employment rate in the European Union for people aged between 20 and 64, according to 2025 labour market data.
Across the EU, 76.1% of people in this age group were employed, representing around 197.7 million individuals. This marks the highest level recorded since data collection began in 2009, and reflects a steady increase compared to previous years.
Among all member states, Malta led the rankings with an employment rate of 83.6%, ahead of the Netherlands (83.4%) and Czechia (82.9%). At the other end of the scale, the lowest employment rates were recorded in Italy (67.6%), Romania (69.0%), and Greece (71.0%).
The data also highlights a gender gap in employment across the European Union. In 2025, men generally recorded higher employment rates than women in all EU countries except Lithuania.
Malta stood out again in the male category, registering the highest male employment rate in the EU at 89.1%. This compares with an EU average male employment rate of 80.9%. The Netherlands (87.2%) and Czechia (88.2%) also recorded high male employment levels.
For women, the EU average stood at 71.3%, with the highest rates found in Estonia (81.4%), Lithuania (80.3%), and Sweden (79.8%). In Malta, the female employment rate was around 76%, placing it among the stronger-performing EU countries, although still below the male rate.
