Malta reaches another big step in building its second interconnector with Sicily

Malta has reached another big step in building its second interconnector with Sicily. The auto transformer and shunt reactors have now arrived and are being installed in both Malta and Sicily, bringing the second interconnector closer to completion.

These machines are very large and heavy. Moving them from ships to their final locations took careful planning. Special trucks, cranes, engineers and transport authorities all worked together to transport the equipment safely.

In Sicily, the shunt reactor was unloaded at Pozzallo Port before being moved to the interconnector site in Ragusa. In Malta, workers also unloaded another shunt reactor and transported the auto transformer to the project site. Installation work is still ongoing.

Once the second interconnector is finished, Malta will have a more reliable electricity supply. It will also double the country's connection to the European electricity grid, making it easier to use more renewable energy such as wind and solar power.

The second interconnector is a 122-kilometre cable between Magħtab in Malta and Ragusa in Sicily. It is a €300 million project, with €261 million coming from European Union funding. It is also expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 13.5 million tonnes over time.
