The Malta Ranger Unit (MRU) recently attended the 6th European Ranger Congress, held near Piatra Craiului National Park in Romania. The event, organised by the European Ranger Federation (ERF), brought together over 260 Rangers from 35 European countries to share experiences, exchange knowledge, and strengthen international cooperation.

The MRU has been a proud member of the ERF since 2023. The stunning mountain village of Fundata, in the heart of the Carpathians, provided a truly breathtaking setting for the event.

One of the highlights of the Congress was the address by Romania’s Minister for the Environment, who emphasised that “greed is not to be accepted” and expressed her firm support for Rangers, noting that “communities will not thrive in an unhealthy environment. Healthy nature is essential for future generations, and it must be prioritised.”

MRU representatives participated in workshops covering a variety of important topics, including bison and beaver reintroduction projects, human–wildlife conflict management, and Ranger mental health.

A moving minute of silence was also held in honour of the late Dr Jane Goodall, initiated by The Thin Green Line Foundation.

Speaking after the event, MRU representatives expressed their enthusiasm for building cross-border collaborations that will benefit both Maltese biodiversity and the wider European environment.

“United we are stronger,” said a spokesperson for the MRU. “Working together across nations helps protect our shared natural heritage for generations to come.”
