Local

Malta has recorded one of the lowest levels of electronic waste collection in the European Union, collecting just 6.4kg per person in 2024, according to new figures published by Eurostat.

The statistics place Malta among the three EU countries with the lowest amounts of e-waste generated, alongside Portugal with 6kg per person, and Cyprus, which ranked lowest at 4.7kg. We are also well below the EU average of 12.3kg of e-waste per person.

Electrical waste includes everyday items such as smartphones, computers, televisions, washing machines and other household appliances that are no longer wanted or usable.

Across the EU, 12.3kg of this e-waste was collected per person in 2024, compared with 32.4kg of new electronics hitting the market per person during the same year. The EU warns that this growing industry must be paired with improvements to the disposal and recycling systems that tackle these products.
