The Malta Police has launched the Support Response Team, a specialised unit operating within the Victim Support Unit to assist families affected by serious crime and critical incidents.

The team provides immediate, compassionate and professional support in situations including fatal traffic accidents, homicides, suicides, disasters and other traumatic events.

Available around the clock, the Support Response Team offers on site emotional, practical and informational assistance at moments of shock and distress.

It also serves as an important link between investigating officers and affected families, helping to ensure clear communication and continuity of care during complex investigations. Since the first of June 2025, the team has supported 310 individuals, with 46 referred to specialised external services for further help.

Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà said that policing in Malta has evolved in recent years from a focus primarily on suspects to a more victim centred approach.

He explained that this shift began with the creation of the Victim Support Unit, now part of the Victim Support Agency Malta, and has been strengthened through the introduction of the Support Response Team, which provides direct assistance at the scene of traumatic incidents.

The initiative forms part of the Malta Police Corporate Strategy covering the period from 2025 to 2030. It aims to reinforce support for vulnerable people, improve the overall response to victims of crime and critical incidents, and strengthen public trust through a people centred model of policing.
