Malta Named 5th Best European Island For Fishing In Autumn

Malta has been named one of Europe’s top destinations for autumn fishing, ranking fifth in a new list by FishingBooker that compared 44 European islands.
The ranking placed Malta ahead of Cyprus, Mallorca and all Greek and Croatian islands, with the island recognised for its variety of fish species, available fishing charters and reported catches.
According to FishingBooker’s data, Malta has 21 fish species currently in season, including lampuki, amberjack, dentex and skipjack tuna. Nine species are considered to be at their best during the autumn season, tying Malta with Mallorca for the highest number in Europe.
The ranking also highlighted Malta’s fishing activity, with 12 fishing charters available and 39 big-fish catches recorded through angler reviews and captain reports, the highest number among Mediterranean islands included in the list.
Lampuki season remains underway in Malta, running from 15 August until 31 December. October is also considered one of the best months for catching amberjack, dentex and skipjack tuna, while squid season begins in November and continues through winter.
The ranking was compiled using data on species in season, the number of fishing charters and major catches reported between 2023 and 2026. Malta’s main fishing locations include St Paul’s Bay and Gżira, attracting anglers looking to experience the island’s diverse marine life.
