Malta Moves Up In Global Fight Against Human Trafficking
Local

Malta has been recognised for making progress in the fight against human trafficking, after moving up in the United States Department of State’s annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report for 2025.

The country has risen from the Tier 2 Watchlist to Tier 2, showing that efforts by the authorities, including the Police Force, are starting to deliver results.

Human trafficking involves the exploitation of people, often through forced labour, sexual exploitation, or other forms of abuse.

The TIP Report assesses how countries are tackling this issue and ranks them according to the progress they make.

According to the report, Malta has stepped up prosecutions against traffickers, including cases connected to financial crime.

More victims are being identified and given support, with special attention to vulnerable groups such as children and asylum seekers. The country has also strengthened legal protections and improved the services available to victims.

The Police Force said the progress reflects its strategy to place victims at the centre of its work.

This includes closer cooperation with other organisations, both in Malta and abroad, and increased training for officers. While challenges remain, the improved ranking confirms that Malta is moving in the right direction.
