Malta Mourns the Passing of Maestro Aurelio Belli at 49

The Maltese music scene is in mourning following the passing of Maestro Aurelio Belli, a respected conductor, educator, and key figure within the local band community, at the age of 49.
Born in Ħamrun on 25 October 1976, Belli’s musical journey began at an early age under the guidance of his grandfather, Louis Olivari, who introduced him to the euphonium. His passion for music grew steadily, leading him to study multiple instruments and deepen his knowledge of music theory under various tutors and conductors. He further honed his craft through international masterclasses in the United Kingdom.
Throughout his career, Belli made significant contributions to Malta’s musical landscape. He performed with ensembles such as Versatile Brass and the Fusion Brass Sextet, while also dedicating much of his life to teaching brass instruments and mentoring young musicians.
Belli served as musical director and conductor of the Duke of Connaught’s Own Band Club, playing a central role in shaping the band’s artistic direction. His influence extended beyond the band scene, as he was also involved in major national productions, including Mużika Mużika, Rockestra, and the Malta International Song Contest. Additionally, he formed part of the management team of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.
In 2020, Belli was diagnosed with cancer. He chose to speak openly about his experience, raising awareness and offering encouragement to others facing similar challenges. His strength and resilience during this period earned him admiration across the community.
Prime Minister Roberta Abela paid tribute to Belli, describing him as “a definition of courage and resilience” who remained positive despite his illness. She noted that he had been actively working on the next edition of A Night at the Palace at Girgenti up until his passing.
Belli remained active in music until his final weeks. Just last month, he conducted the orchestra at Mużika Mużika, leading performances of Imħabba, sung by his wife Gloriana in memory of her mother Helen Micallef, and Marija l-Maltija during the classics evening.
He is survived by his wife Gloriana and their daughter Alexandra.
Malta Daily sends its condolences to Aurelio's family.
