On the occasion of World Human Rights Day, Malta highlighted a decade of progress in equality and civil liberties.

Rebecca Buttigieg, Parliamentary Secretariat for Equality and Reforms, marked both the country’s historic human rights achievements and the tenth anniversary of the Human Rights Directorate.

During a press conference, Buttigieg outlined major reforms introduced over the past ten years, particularly advances in LGBTIQ+ civil rights that have secured Malta’s top position in European rankings for ten consecutive years, as well as significant steps in gender equality.

She noted that these reforms have positioned Malta among Europe’s leading nations within this sector, referring to the latest equality index published this month by the European Institute for Gender Equality, which recognised Malta’s remarkable progress since 2015.

As she stated, “We’ve broken the barriers of conservatism and built the bases for a modern and progressive society.”

She also emphasised the role of the Human Rights Directorate, established ten years ago to drive reform and embed human rights at the heart of government policy.

To mark the occasion, Buttigieg launched ‘Championing Human Rights’, a new publication featuring articles from key figures who shaped Malta’s human rights landscape, demonstrating that collective effort can inspire meaningful change.
