Malta Marks 50 Years Of REMPEC With Call For Greater Maritime Cooperation

Malta has marked the 50th anniversary of the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC), highlighting the importance of regional cooperation in protecting the Mediterranean marine environment.
Established in 1976 and based in Malta, REMPEC works to strengthen the prevention, preparedness and response to marine pollution incidents across the Mediterranean. The anniversary was commemorated under the theme “Our Mediterranean, Our Responsibility”, focusing on the need for countries in the region to work together to address shared environmental challenges.
Minister for Energy, Environment and the Regeneration of the Grand Harbour Miriam Dalli said that hosting REMPEC places a particular responsibility on Malta to continue promoting cooperation between Mediterranean countries. She said that while the sea surrounding the region provides economic and commercial opportunities, it must also be protected from environmental threats.
Minister for Sustainable Mobility Chris Bonett said REMPEC’s 50 years demonstrate the importance of cooperation in dealing with risks that extend beyond national borders. He noted that marine pollution does not stop at country boundaries and that shared challenges require shared solutions.
Bonett said REMPEC’s role has become increasingly important as the maritime sector continues to change, with new fuels, technologies, larger vessels and more complex risks emerging. He stressed the need for continued investment in prevention, training, information sharing and coordinated response systems.
As the host country of REMPEC, Malta said it will continue supporting regional cooperation and efforts towards cleaner shipping and ports. The anniversary highlighted the role of collaboration between Mediterranean countries in protecting the sea that connects them.
