MALTA MARKS 48 YEARS SINCE THE TRAGIC UNSOLVED MURDER OF KARIN GRECH

Today marks 48 years since the tragic murder of 15-year-old Karin Grech, a crime that remains one of Malta’s most haunting unsolved cases. On 28 December 1977, Karin was killed when a letter bomb, disguised as a late Christmas gift, exploded in her family home in San Ġwann. The intended target was her father, Professor Edwin Grech, a gynaecologist caught in the midst of a bitter dispute between the Labour government and striking doctors.
Karin opened the package, believing it to be a present, while her brother watched. She was rushed to hospital but died about 30 minutes later. The same day, another bomb was sent to a Labour MP but failed to detonate. Despite decades of investigation, no one has ever been charged or convicted, and the case remains officially open.
Over the years, suspicions have centred on a group of medical students allegedly involved in hiring a criminal to build the device, with claims that political interference hindered progress. Karin’s father and several senior politicians and officials over the years, have repeatedly urged authorities to pursue justice.
Nearly five decades later, Karin’s death continues to cast a long shadow over Malta’s political and social memory.
