Malta Leads EU In Households Affected by Pollution In 2023

In 2023, 12.2% of the EU population reported that pollution, grime, or other environmental issues affected their household, down from 15.1% in 2019.
However, some countries experienced far higher levels of impact. Malta had the highest share of people reporting such problems, with 34.7% of households affected, followed by Greece at 20.5% and Germany at 16.8%. By contrast, Croatia recorded the lowest share at just 4.2%, with Sweden and Slovakia also reporting relatively low levels at 5.0% and 5.8% respectively.
Exposure to pollution also varies according to urbanisation. Across the EU, 6.8% of people living in rural areas reported being affected, rising to 10.5% in towns and suburbs, and 17.2% in cities, highlighting the particular challenges faced by urban populations.
