Malta Launches Food Safety And Security Authority To Safeguard The Nation’s Future

Malta has taken a major step toward a stronger, more sustainable future with the launch of the Food Safety and Security Authority, established under the Food Safety and Security Authority Act 2025.
Prime Minister Robert Abela described the new authority as a key pillar in enhancing food governance, protecting food security, and ensuring that all food produced, processed, or imported into Malta is safe, traceable, and of the highest quality.
The Authority will bring together all food safety functions under one national structure for the first time, aligning with the Malta 2050 Vision for a modern, innovative, and resilient agricultural system.
Abela highlighted a €20 million investment in projects including the modernisation of the Public Abatoir, new “Farm to Table” traceability systems at the Pitkalija, and the creation of a Food Innovation Hub.
Anton Refalo, Minister for Agriculture, hailed the launch as “a milestone for Malta,” emphasising transparency, coordination, and consumer trust.
Christophe Hansen, European Commissioner, and Dr Nikolaus Kriz, EFSA Executive Director, praised the initiative as a crucial contribution to Europe’s wider food safety network, a step that not only protects Maltese families but secures the nation’s place in a sustainable global food system.
