Malta Is Officially No Longer Just A Summer Destination, New EU Data Shows

Malta is proving it's much more than just a summer holiday hotspot.
New figures published by Eurostat show that Malta now has the lowest concentration of summer tourism in the entire European Union, meaning visitors are choosing to holiday on the islands throughout the year instead of only during July and August.
Just 21.9% of Malta's annual tourist overnight stays took place during the two busiest summer months, compared to the EU average of 31.1%. Germany and Finland followed behind Malta, with 24.0% and 24.1% respectively.
The figures highlight how Malta has evolved beyond its traditional "sun and sea" image, becoming a destination people visit in every season.
Eurostat's data also shows Malta performed above the EU average during eight months of the year, including January to May and October to December, suggesting more travellers are choosing the islands outside the typical summer period.
Compared to other Mediterranean destinations, the difference is striking. More than half of Croatia's annual tourist nights (54.5%) happen in July and August, while Bulgaria recorded 43.4% and Greece 41.6%.
Tourism Minister Jo Etienne Abela welcomed the results, saying they reflect years of investment to make Malta a year-round destination.
Malta Tourism Authority CEO Carlo Micallef said the islands now attract visitors through culture, history, gastronomy, diving, sports, conferences and international events, helping Malta become a destination people want to visit in every season.
