Malta Is 2nd Most Tourism-Intensive Country in EU, Eurostat Reports

Malta has ranked second among European Union countries for tourism intensity, with Eurostat reporting that tourists spent 21.7 nights in short-term accommodation per resident in 2025.
Only Croatia recorded a higher ratio, at 24.5 nights per inhabitant, while Cyprus followed in third place with 19.4 nights.
Across the EU, tourism intensity averaged 7 nights per resident, significantly lower than Malta’s average.
While the figures reflect our strong tourism industry, they also raise questions about sustainability, infrastructure and the impact of overpopulation on local communities.
With Malta’s limited space and resources, managing tourism growth remains crucial to protecting residents’ quality of life while supporting businesses and employment.
