Malta International Airport Welcomes 5.2 Million Passengers in First Half of 2026

Malta International Airport welcomed 5.2 million passengers between January and June 2026, marking an impressive 15.6% increase compared to the same period last year, according to figures shared by Tourism Minister Jo Etienne Abela.
The minister described June as a landmark month for the airport, highlighting the launch of two new direct routes that further strengthen Malta's international connectivity. The new services connect Malta with Billund in Denmark and New York's John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in the United States.
The United Kingdom remained Malta International Airport's largest passenger market during the first six months of the year, reflecting its continued importance to the country's tourism industry. Meanwhile, Italy and Poland also recorded strong growth, with the Polish market standing out after registering an increase of more than 52%.
Abela said the latest figures underline the airport's growing role as a key hub for regional connectivity and tourism, with passenger traffic continuing to rise as Malta expands its network of destinations.
The strong performance during the first half of the year follows sustained growth in air travel demand and reinforces the importance of expanding route networks to attract more visitors while providing greater travel options for residents.
The addition of the Billund and New York routes is expected to further boost tourism and strengthen Malta's links with both European and long-haul markets as the island continues to experience record passenger numbers.
