MALTA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WARNS OF FLIGHT DISRUPTIONS AS MOUNT ETNA ASH CLOUDS AFFECT MALTA

Malta International Airport has warned passengers of flight disruptions caused by volcanic ash clouds over the Maltese Islands following renewed activity at Mount Etna in Sicily.

In a passenger notice, the airport advised those travelling today to check their flight status before heading to the airport. Passengers whose flights have been cancelled or significantly delayed were told not to travel to the airport unless instructed to do so by their airline.

The disruptions come as Mount Etna continues to erupt, with volcanic ash affecting airspace in the region. Earlier, arrivals at Catania Airport were suspended until 15:00 GMT after ash from the eruption drifted into the area. Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology maintained its highest aviation alert level, warning of ongoing hazards from ash emissions.

KM Malta Airlines has also warned passengers that the situation at Catania Airport remains unpredictable and can change rapidly depending on volcanic activity, winds and weather conditions. The airline said flights may be delayed or cancelled at short notice where safety concerns arise.

Both airlines and airport authorities are continuing to monitor developments closely, with passengers urged to check directly with their airline for the latest information before travelling.

Malta International Airport apologised for the disruption and thanked passengers for their understanding and cooperation.
