Malta Has The Most Affordable Electricity Prices In The EU, Eurostat Reveals

The statistics, covering the first six months of 2026, reveal that Malta ranked first for electricity affordability when taking into account differences in prices and living costs between European countries.
Malta recorded the lowest figure at 13.8, followed by Hungary at 14.7 and Luxembourg at 15.5. Meanwhile, Romania recorded the highest figure at 46.9, followed by Poland at 41.1 and Czechia at 34.3. This means electricity in Romania was approximately 3.4 times more expensive than in Malta when comparing prices on this basis.
Malta was also among the cheapest EU countries in terms of electricity prices, with households paying an average of approximately 13 cents per unit (kWh) of electricity.
Only Hungary recorded a lower price at 11 cents, while Bulgaria matched Malta at 13 cents.
For comparison, the EU average stood at approximately 28 cents per unit, more than double Malta's rate.
Malta's electricity prices continue to be supported by government subsidies, which have helped keep household energy bills stable despite international price increases.
Across Europe, household electricity prices decreased by 2.2% during the first half of 2026, although they remain higher than before the 2022 energy crisis.
