Malta Has the Lowest Women-to-Men Ratio in the EU

Malta has the lowest women-to-men ratio in the European Union, according to the latest population figures for 2025.

On 1 January 2025, Malta recorded just 88.3 women for every 100 men, meaning men significantly outnumbered women. This stands in sharp contrast to the EU as a whole, where there were 104.2 women for every 100 men.

Slovenia had the second-lowest ratio at 98.7 women per 100 men, followed by Sweden at 98.8. At the other end of the scale, Latvia recorded the highest ratio, with 115.6 women for every 100 men, followed by Estonia and Lithuania.

Malta's figures are particularly striking because the gender balance has changed considerably over the past 20 years. In 2005, Malta had 101.8 women for every 100 men. By 2025, this had fallen to 88.3, representing the largest decline in the ratio among all EU countries.

The figures come as Malta's population continues to grow rapidly. The country had around 574,000 residents in 2025, with its population increasing by 43% since 2005. Malta also remains the EU's most densely populated country, with around 1,817 people per square kilometre.

These figures underline Malta's increasingly distinctive demographic profile within the European Union.
