The Partit Nazzjonalista has reiterated what it describes as the urgent need to address Malta’s rising population density, following the latest Eurostat data showing the country remains the most densely populated in Europe.

According to the EU’s statistical agency, Malta continues to have a significantly higher population density than other EU Member States and well above the EU average, the PN said.

The report also indicates that Malta is among a small number of countries where population density is still increasing year on year, while most other Member States are seeing a decline.

Between 2015 and 2024, Malta’s population density increased by around 400 people per square kilometre. Latest figures place the density at almost 1,800 people per square kilometre, compared with around 1,400 in 2015.

The PN said this places Malta far ahead of other countries, including Luxembourg at 262 people per square kilometre, Cyprus at 106, and Estonia at 32. The EU average stands at around 110 people per square kilometre.

The Netherlands, at 530, is the closest in comparison but remains well below Malta’s level.

The party said this trend reflects government policy on labour migration and has warned that the current economic model is not sustainable. It argued that the situation is contributing to pressure on infrastructure and public services.

It listed concerns including congestion, pollution, strain on healthcare services, and environmental impacts such as sewage affecting seawater quality.

The Partit Nazzjonalista said the situation is now a national priority and called for immediate action to safeguard quality of life for Maltese and Gozitan citizens.
