More than 30,500 people in Malta have registered as organ donors, with the national register currently including 30,548 registered donors.

The figure was revealed on World Organ Donation Day, as Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Ian Borg encouraged more people to register, highlighting that a single donor can help save up to eight lives.

Established in 2016, Malta’s National Human Organ and Tissue Donation Register is the official legal record of a person’s wishes regarding organ donation.

More than 2,410 people have joined the register over the past two and a half years, following awareness initiatives by health authorities and organisations supporting organ donation.

Borg also registered as an official organ donor under current legislation, having previously been part of the former voluntary organ donor card scheme.

People can now register online in just a few minutes using their e-ID through organdonation.gov.mt.

The public can also learn more about organ donation at Mater Dei Hospital on the 13th and 14th of August.
