Malta recorded the largest population increase in the European Union over the past decade, with its population growing by 30.9% between the 1st of January 2015 and the 1st of January 2025.

The figures show Malta far outpaced the EU as a whole, whose population increased by 7.8 million people, or 1.8%, during the same period.

Luxembourg recorded the second-largest increase at 21.1%, followed by Ireland at 16.3%.

At the other end of the scale, Bulgaria saw the biggest population decline, with its population falling by 8.4% over the decade. Croatia recorded a decrease of 7.3%, while Latvia’s population dropped by 6.3%.

Malta’s significant population growth has coincided with a substantial increase in the number of foreign workers and residents living on the islands, alongside changes in the country’s labour market and economy.

The figures highlight the scale of Malta’s demographic growth compared with other EU Member States over the 10-year period.
