The Maltese film industry generated more than €1.2 billion for the national economy between 2018 and 2025, according to a newly published independent economic report by the Malta Film Commission.

The report highlights a period of rapid growth for the sector, showing that its total contribution to Malta’s Gross Domestic Product reached €1,208 million over the eight-year period. This represents a sixfold increase compared to the 2005 to 2017 timeframe, underlining the industry’s expansion and increasing importance within the Maltese economy.

Employment within the sector has also seen significant growth. The report indicates that around 2,500 people are now employed or supported through film-related activity, marking a fivefold increase compared to earlier years. It notes that the industry has shifted from a largely seasonal operation to a more consistent and stable contributor to employment and skills development in Malta.

A key aspect of the report is the evaluation of government incentives. While financial rebates have been used to attract international productions, the findings show that government revenue generated by film activity has consistently exceeded the cost of these incentives. Between 2018 and 2025, this resulted in a positive net balance of €12 million per year, compared to €3 million annually in the previous period.

The study also highlights the wider economic impact across several sectors, particularly accommodation, transport, food services, and arts and entertainment. It describes film production as a form of foreign direct investment that continues to generate value across the Maltese economy.
