Malta has been officially selected by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) to host one of Europe’s 13 newly established AI Factory Antennas, marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey and reinforcing its role within Europe’s artificial intelligence and high-performance computing network.

The Maltese Antenna, named CALYPSO (Computational AI factory Link Yielding Performance, Services, and Outreach), will be led by the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) and linked to Greece’s PHAROS AI Factory. It will offer Maltese startups, SMEs, researchers, and public bodies access to EuroHPC AI supercomputing, algorithmic support, training, and datasets across key sectors such as finance, transport, and health, fostering AI development, compliance, and collaboration throughout Europe.

Malta’s selection as an AI Factory Antenna is part of the wider EuroHPC AI Factories initiative, launched to accelerate Europe’s leadership in AI and to make AI-optimised supercomputing resources more accessible to Member States. The European Union will fund the AI Factory Antennas with an investment of approximately €55 million, supplemented by contributions from participating countries. Each Antenna will collaborate closely with its linked AI Factory, providing national ecosystems with access to cutting-edge computing power for research, innovation, and industrial applications.

Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects, Silvio Schembri, welcomed the announcement, stating, “This is a proud moment for Malta. Through CALYPSO, our country will be directly connected to Europe’s most advanced AI and supercomputing capabilities, creating new opportunities for our innovators, researchers, and entrepreneurs to test, train, and deploy AI solutions with global potential. This achievement reinforces Malta’s position as a hub for digital excellence and innovation.”

MDIA CEO Kenneth Brincat added, “We are proud that, through the acquisition of European funds, we will be creating the CALYPSO AI Factory Antenna with a value of €10 million. This project will strengthen our local ecosystem and provide direct access to advanced Artificial Intelligence resources, thereby reinforcing Malta’s position as a centre of innovation.”
