Malta Celebrates National Day In Paris With UNESCO Milestone

The Embassy of Malta in France, together with Malta’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, celebrated the National Day of Malta with a reception in Paris on the 19th of September.
The gathering welcomed diplomats, representatives of international organisations, French partners, and members of the Maltese community in France.
The celebration highlighted the relationship between Malta and France, built on centuries of cultural, social, and historical connections.
These enduring ties were also reflected in the ongoing exhibition Au temps du Grand Maître Jean-Paul de Lascaris: Nice, Malte et la Méditerranée. The exhibition will run in Nice until November 2025, showcasing rich exchanges between the two countries.
Ambassador Pierre Clive Agius underlined Malta’s dedication to multilateralism and international law, stressing the importance of dialogue in resolving conflicts.
He condemned Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, expressed support for a two-state solution in Palestine, and reaffirmed Malta’s belief in diplomacy as the path to peace.
The evening also commemorated the 60th anniversary of Malta’s membership in UNESCO. Malta’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Mons. Vella Gauci, reflected on six decades of collaboration, emphasising that culture is not just heritage but “life itself.”
He highlighted Malta’s renewed efforts in expanding the UNESCO listing of Valletta to include the historic fortifications of the Order of St John.
Looking forward, Malta announced its candidacy for the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for the 2027–2031 term, reaffirming its role in safeguarding heritage, advancing dialogue, and promoting peace worldwide.
