Malta Calls For Stronger Engagement With Southern Mediterranean Neighbours

Malta called for stronger cooperation between the European Union and its southern Mediterranean neighbours during the MED9 Conference in Trogir, Croatia, with Minister Chris Fearne stressing that the region’s stability and prosperity depend on closer collaboration between both shores of the Mediterranean.
Fearne said that the Mediterranean should not be viewed as a dividing line between Europe and its southern neighbours, but as a shared region requiring a collective approach. “The Mediterranean is not a border. It is a shared region,” he said, arguing that Europe must strengthen its engagement with neighbouring countries across the sea to promote stability and economic development.
The Minister stressed that cooperation with southern neighbours must extend beyond migration, which he described as a symptom of wider challenges affecting the region. He said stronger partnerships are needed to address common issues and create greater opportunities for shared growth.
The conference focused on several key issues, including the EU’s long-term budget, enlargement and the security implications linked to these areas. During discussions, Fearne emphasised that European policies must deliver practical benefits for citizens and improve their quality of life.
Speaking about the Multiannual Financial Framework, he said EU funding should contribute towards a safer, more competitive and more prosperous Europe by supporting Member States’ economies. He also highlighted the importance of cohesion and ensuring that smaller Member States have access to the resources needed to participate fully in Europe’s development.
On EU enlargement, Fearne reaffirmed Malta’s support, saying that expansion can contribute to greater stability and strengthen the Mediterranean voice within the Union. He called for accession processes to progress without unnecessary delays, while ensuring that outstanding issues are addressed before countries join.
He also highlighted the importance of maintaining unanimity in major political decisions, ensuring that common positions are reached through consensus and that the interests of all Member States are represented.
Returning to the Mediterranean dimension, Fearne said discussions with the European Commissioner for the Mediterranean provide an opportunity to strengthen cooperation across the region and build closer links between Europe and its southern neighbours.
