Malta Boosts Fisheries Research With New Data Management System

Malta continued to strengthen its position in fisheries and aquaculture research with the launch of a new data management system, marking another important step forward for the sector.
In under two years, the Government, through Aquatic Resources Malta, has made significant progress in building a research environment that is increasingly recognised for its quality and ambition. Operating within the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, the agency is steadily establishing itself as a centre of excellence, supported by a growing network of European and international collaborations.
The introduction of the Aquatic Information Management System represents a major development. Designed specifically for the agency’s needs, the platform provides researchers and scientists with a centralised and structured tool for managing fisheries data. By bringing together previously dispersed datasets, the system improves accuracy, consistency and traceability, while supporting more efficient analysis and reporting.
Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said highlighted the agency’s rapid growth, noting improvements in both research output and infrastructure, alongside the creation of a strong and motivated research community.
Chief Executive Officer Frank Fabri emphasised that the system will reduce errors and streamline processes, contributing to higher quality research. He also pointed to increased public engagement and educational initiatives.

Head of Fisheries Research Marija Gatt described the system as a key milestone in digital transformation, strengthening Malta’s capacity to meet national and European reporting obligations.
