Malta Becomes Key Migration Spot For Painted Lady Butterflies

If you're in Malta right now and seeing hundreds of butterflies, there's a good chance you're witnessing part of a major migration event, most likely involving the Painted Lady butterfly.
The Painted Lady is famous for enormous migrations between Africa and Europe. Malta sits right in the middle of one of their main Mediterranean routes, so in some years large numbers pass through the islands.
2026 appears to be a very strong year for Painted Lady migration across Europe. Butterfly experts in the UK have reported an unusually large arrival linked to favorable weather conditions in North Africa and southern Europe, with butterflies moving north on warm southerly winds.
If the butterflies have orange-brown wings with black and white markings, are fast, have purposeful flight, and are often moving steadily in one direction, have large numbers appearing suddenly over a few days, and look worn or faded after long-distance travel, then they are most probably Painted Lady butterflies.
