Malta Appoints New Representative To Palestine

Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta, presented the Letters of Appointment to Mr David Muscat, officially designating him as Malta’s Representative to the State of Palestine.
Mr Muscat succeeds His Excellency Franklin J. Aquilina, who was recently appointed Ambassador to Libya. His appointment comes on the same day that Prime Minister Robert Abela formally recognised the State of Palestine at the United Nations Assembly in New York, reaffirming Malta’s support for a two-state solution and the peaceful coexistence of Israel and Palestine.
The ceremony, held at San Anton Palace, saw President Spiteri Debono emphasise the historic nature of Malta’s recognition. She noted that, together with other nations, Malta’s decision could contribute to advancing the cause of lasting peace in the region.
Speaking at the event, Mr Muscat highlighted the urgent humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. He recalled that in recent days the Maltese Government had dispatched 250 tonnes of flour to support those affected by the ongoing conflict.
The President also urged that Malta’s recognition of Palestine be seen as an opportunity to continue building and strengthening diplomatic and cooperative relations between Malta and the State of Palestine.
Prime Minister Abela’s announcement at the UN underlined Malta’s commitment to peace and a two-state solution, marking a historic moment in the country’s foreign policy and further solidifying its role on the international stage.
