Malta Animal Awareness Week Launch To Promote Animal Welfare

Parliamentary Secretary for Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said has unveiled the programme for the Malta Animal Awareness Week, a nationwide initiative dedicated to promoting animal welfare, responsible pet ownership and greater public awareness of the importance of protecting animals.
A range of initiatives will take place throughout the week, including announcements on new investments in the sector, educational and awareness campaigns, community activities and the Animal Honours Awards. The initiative also aims to recognise the people and organisations that work every day to improve the lives of animals across Malta.
Speaking during the launch, Bugeja Said said the week is an opportunity to celebrate the bond between people and animals while reminding owners of the responsibilities that come with caring for pets.
She said the Government wants to continue building a culture where animal abuse and neglect are not accepted, adding that effective enforcement must go hand in hand with education and prevention. She also stressed that safeguarding animal welfare is a shared responsibility across society.
One of the highlights of the week will be the Animal Honours Awards, which will recognise the contribution of individuals, businesses, voluntary organisations, sanctuaries and volunteers working within the animal welfare sector. The awards will also feature adoption stories that showcase the positive impact of giving animals in need a second chance.
Commissioner for Animal Welfare Elliot Magro said the initiative coincides with the beginning of the new scholastic year, allowing the Office of the Commissioner for Animal Welfare to continue educating students about responsible animal care and the importance of protecting animal welfare throughout an animal's life.
Meanwhile, Director of Animal Welfare Dennis Sciberras said protecting animals requires ongoing commitment through daily work, education and greater public awareness. He said the Directorate will continue strengthening its services while encouraging communities to play an active role in supporting animal welfare.
The Government said it will continue investing in animal protection by improving services and infrastructure while strengthening education, prevention and enforcement measures in collaboration with everyone working to promote the welfare of animals throughout Malta.
